What are the health benefits of Manual Lymph Drainage?
Benefits include:
- Reducing lymphoedema-related swelling by encouraging lymphatic fluid movement
- Assisting with stagnant lymph in cases of lipoedema
- Helping reduce general swelling and fluid retention
- Supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes
- Supporting circulation and tissue health
- Helping reduce inflammation, tightness and discomfort
- Supporting post-surgical and post-treatment recovery
- Supporting skin condition and tissue healing
- Promoting relaxation and stress reduction
- Supporting healthy lymphatic and immune function
MLD is widely used in the management of lymphoedema and lipoedema, and as supportive care during recovery from surgery, injury or cancer treatment. Treatments are personalised following a professional assessment to support safe, evidence-based care.
How many sessions of Lymph Drainage are advisable?
The number of Manual Lymph Drainage sessions required depends on the severity of your condition and your individual health needs.
Patients with lymphoedema, particularly following lymph node removal due to cancer, may require more intensive and frequent treatment than those seeking MLD for general health, wellness or supportive care.
A personalised treatment plan will be discussed following a thorough consultation and assessment of your medical history and current condition.
What is the difference between a normal massage and Lymph Drainage?
Traditional Massage
Focuses primarily on the muscles, using techniques that may be deeper and firmer to address muscle stiffness, tension, aches and pain.
Manual Lymph Drainage
MLD is a gentle, specialised technique that focuses on the lymphatic system rather than the muscles. Pressure is light and controlled, with treatment adjusted according to the individual’s condition and the presence of fibrosis.
MLD uses precise, rhythmic movements that gently stretch the skin to stimulate lymphatic vessels. Because lymph moves slowly through the lymphatic system, the technique requires specialised training and clinical understanding.
For individuals whose lymphatic pathways have been altered through surgery, cancer treatment or other medical interventions, MLD can help guide lymph fluid towards healthy, functioning lymph nodes and alternative drainage pathways.
The goal of MLD is to support lymphatic flow, reduce swelling and fibrosis, and improve tissue health rather than treat muscle tension.
What is lymph and the lymphatic system?
Lymph is a clear fluid that moves through the body’s tissues and lymphatic system. It contains white blood cells, fats, proteins and other components involved in immune function.
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and ducts that collects excess fluid from tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. It also plays an important role in supporting the immune system.
When lymphatic fluid does not drain efficiently, fluid can accumulate in the tissues and contribute to swelling, including lymphoedema.
The lymphatic system therefore plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting immunity and transporting waste from tissues.
I have had painful lymph drainage before. Are your sessions also painful?
No. Manual Lymph Drainage should not be painful.
Modern MLD uses gentle, precise pressure rather than forceful massage. Research using Fluorescence-Guided Imaging has helped demonstrate the importance of using appropriate pressure and direction when working with lymphatic vessels.
The effectiveness of MLD lies in skilled technique rather than deep pressure. Gentle, rhythmic movements are used to guide lymph fluid towards healthy, functioning lymph nodes while taking the individual’s lymphatic pathways into account.
Your treatment should feel gentle, controlled and comfortable.
